FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between Stock vs Street, Circuit, and Competition Phaser Repairs?

In a normally aspirated M156 with little modifications, there is no reason to go with Circuit (previously, Stage II) or Competition (previously, Stage III) from a Street set (previously, Stage I) of Phaser Repair; as the only benefits are the frictional coefficient (CoF) and increased durability of the material. The Street Phaser Repairs are plenty adequate to tackle the power curve of the Naturally Aspirated M156.

Circuit and Competition Plates are coloured naturally as they undergo a treatment process to gain improved tribological properties. The low CoF and treatment processes both assist timing call from the ECU aid in the repeatability (consistency aspect), and reliability of the plates. This is verified using DAS/Xentry logs as well as with the use of VCM Scanner by HPTuners. The design choices are offered for a worry-free usability for the higher demands of the supercharger and the benefit of the lifetime warranty as is the case with the M156 Competition Stage Phaser Repair.

There is no harm to use Circuit or Competition plates on non-supercharged platforms, but it is unnecessary.

What is 63 Motorsports’ R&D process?

63 Motorsports is a manufacturing company with heavy investment in research and development! Our technicians solely work on internal development vehicles and therefore outsource service and repair work worldwide. List of dealers HERE. To join our network send an email, its FREE!

Profits largely fund 63 Motorsports Inc. Research & Development. This allows the company to grow and offer increased product offering across the AMG’ heavy-hitter models. We follow the Draft, Design, Drive & Punishment, D(3)P, model.

Our Drafting, Design, Drive, & Punishment D(3)P Process:

First we establish DRAFTS, mapping of baseline values on strengths of stock parts. Datalogs on functions and duty cycles are read in real-time using HPTuners ECU Scanner under a multitude of driving styles (load and coast). Then an improved material is hand selected according to evidence based practice alongside Yield strengths and Charpy V-notch values are used to replace the stock materials as is customary with AISI. Main concerns are confronted, and asked; e.g. “What components will potentially be affected and adversely harmed?”. We are protecting and preserving the engine after all!

DESIGNS are done and prototypes are machined for fitment appropriateness and use. As an example, factoring in the RPMs that the valvetrain undergoes and the effects it’ll have on the new materials are heavily considered and replicated before it proceeds to the next stage. Once parts have passed stress testing and with material warpage and breakage mapped, they move on. If not, revisions are applied until requirements are met.

The final stage involves the DRIVE and PUNISHMENT, in-car testing, done to the equivalent of the standard Mercedes-AMG Oil Change Interval (OCI) and an inspection of the parts thereafter. We would apply appropriate damaging and punishment strategies to our parts to ensure reliability, longevity and usability remains the same throughout the life of the part. Troubleshooting applies heavily to ensure the ME accepts the modification contentedly.

E.g. In Q3 2020, with the cooperation of good weather, the Stage I adjusters underwent 10,000 hard quick miles (15,000 kms) province-wide and across the great Western Canadian Rockies. The resulting drive was a true worry-free experience!

This tried, true and tested approach sets the bar for all current and future 63 Motorsports products. Our Staged Lockplates for the M156 go through a fitment test using a negative image of the original part that ensures tolerances are tight before they get to their respective cars.

Need more? The scientific approach adds an additional touch of Chemistry, a Used Oil Analysis (UOA) is done and compared with previous UOA’s to see if there are any chemical indicators of accelerated wear within the engines. Any indicators of wear sets projects back until the problems have been resolved and alleviated. Wear is an expected progression of any engine. You will never receive a Used Oil Analysis with ZERO particles of alloy. As an example when M156 lockplates get bedded in the surfaces will fond their home and find the path of least resistance.

Rounding of sharp surfaces will occur and the assemblies will find stability. As seen below with Circuit Phaser Repair Plates with the beginnings of balance.

After passing each step successfully, the part is then subjected to unrealistic practices to determine what conditions result in part failures. Only then are functional parts released for use/sale and deemed safe for road use. Often times a part is revised several iterations to move ahead onto the next step.

Access to RMM racetrack engances the competitiveness of our parts to the already potent mix.

What if the product I ordered is defective, incorrect or damaged?

Any damages incurred from post is the liability and responsibility of the courier. The items sold are inspected and follow quality assurance practices. E.g. the plates go through a four step process with the last quality check following a temperature and humidity controlled environment using a brand new untouched M156 Cam Adjuster Unit. BLACK plates are batch tracked with production dates and carry a Certificate of Conformation. Should there be any errors in item(s) in the order please reach out so that we may resolve the issue immediately.

Due to processes used, each plate will have its unique grinding patterns and fixture markings that may seem like they are “damaged”. Rest assured these are documented during inspection, the parts are still completely functional and will not harm operation.

We highly encourage owners to consult our authorized dealers as listed on our homepage. This greatly decreases issues with parts and guarantees your AMG’s will be problem free and come out of the shop in a better state than it had been brought in. Parts installed by authorized dealers also carry a two year limited warranty on parts or 30,000 kilometers/18,000 miles. This warranty only applies to the dealers as listed on the website and is not extended to DIY jobs. The dealer list is updated regularly.

Are your plates stronger than stock?

Not only are our plates stronger, but they’re over engineered to be better. The angle of the keyhole has oil priming improved and optimized. This ensures that timing is at its most accurate and most effortless state. Datalogs have been taken, observed and compared between all three stages ensuring processes were objective and thorough.

Strongest HRC will be counter productive in the M156 aluminum heads for example. We have found that wear metals (in ppm) increase during oil analysis whenever free radicals of high HRC steel are present. We’ve also used and selected steel alloys at its most usable strength, and effective state, for the given purpose for the M156 Lockplates. We pride ourselves in having improved upon the standard plate and offer the only true unnecessarily overbuilt Stage III Lockplates that carry a lifetime warranty. We are the only company offering such a guarantee for the M156. Whenever and wherever possible ask your mechanic to use 63 Motorsports Inc.

The Plus designation “+” came about as a necessary revision due to the supply shortage that COVID-19 brought on to the world. It is an improvement in 4340 materials and procedures used to build the lockplates. Due to supply shortages of 2020 (results of the COVID-19 pandemic) the common run of the mill alloys 4110 (P110), 4140 and 4340 were, more often than not, out of stock! The decision made was to utilize aerospace grade steel alloy, at a higher premium, offering us a steadier higher supply to keep costs down on a superior product.

Aerospace steel, with the likes of aircraft landing gear alloys are utilized to increase anti-wear characteristics where it matters most with no risk of chipping. Offering the M156 customer a more refined tougher and better replacement through and through. We keep affordability in focus to foster the community and promote Mercedes-AMG’s true capabilities as an eight cylinder powerhouse.

Camshaft Break-In

Only use engine oil with high zinc content (ZDDP count of 1400 or more). Apply assembly lube liberally with the recommended amount of zinc for assembly and installation. Inspect the tappets for wear. At initial start-up run the engine at 2000-3000 rpm for 30 minutes.

It is required to pair an unused set of tappets with camshafts to decrease camshaft failure. This allows the two unworn surfaces of the camshaft lobes and flat bucket of the tappet to marry and promote essential functions of the valvetrain. Used tappets will carry markings from the previous camshaft lobe that can be detrimental to the new camshafts unmarked and smooth lobe surface.

A proper inspection of oil film tolerances and measurements of the cam bridge/journal caps should also be taken.

There are only two styles of tappets now available from the dealer, SLS (gray top) or the Black Series Tappets (black), as the previous uncoated tappets are now defunct. We push for our very own Black Series Tappets as we’ve engineered a process to ensure that these tappets are FULLY primed with oil throughout its many internal pieces out of the engine. Simply compressing a spongy lifter leaves the bucket reservoir with pockets of air and inadequate amounts of oil for first start-up. SLS (gray top) tappets have a smaller oil reservoir than the Black Series Tappets and carry improved components within the lifter body that are found to be more resilient to wear conditions, e.g. ceramic ball bearing valves, for improved weight savings and durability.

The lobes on our M156 camshafts show smooth edge transitions from the corners with no pitting. The profile shows the slight micron taper that is beginning to finely sheen from its actuation against the flat tappet bucket lifters also carries no signs of pitting.

A comparable GM flat tappet cam with expected wear.
